New Jersey License Information

Construction Work Regulated:

New home construction and home repair work is regulated by the state through registration. Pre qualification is required before bidding or performing any state work.

Electrical and Plumbing work is regulated at the state level.


License Requirements

Electrical Contractors:

  • Applicants must pass both a business law and trade examination with a score of 70%. Five years of experience and a $1,000 license bond is also required.
  • The three year renewal fee is $150. The average processing time on applications is 60 days.
  • There were 9,600 licensees as of October 1994.

Plumbing Contractors:

  • Applicants must pass a business law and a trade examination and document five years of experience. A $3,000 bond is also required. Contact CA Contractor School Online by email for Bonding and Insurance Company Information.
  • The initial application fee schedule is available from CA Contractor School Online by email. The two year renewal fee is $120.
  • There were 7,000 licensees as of October 1994.

Other:

  • Public works contracts require a performance and payment bond, to be determined by the Director of the Division of Building and Construction.
  • Contractors must carry workers' compensation and liability insurance.

Reciprocal Agreements

New Jersey has no reciprocal agreements with any other states.
